The Australian government will introduce legislation requiring digital services to invest a minimum amount of revenue in local productions, according to government statements this week.

Services such as Netflix and other providers that have one million subscribers must contribute a minimum of ten percent of their local spending or 7.5% of revenue on Australian productions.

The law will be introduced to parliament this week covering documentaries and educational content.

Government ministers stated the move is designed to safeguard production employment in the industry. The platforms have not yet responded publicly.

'Remarkable productions'

"We have local production obligations on free-to-air television and pay television, however previously, there has been no guarantee that we could see Australian narratives via digital platforms," a government representative stated.

"Since their introduction in Australia, streaming services have created some extraordinary series. These requirements guarantee such productions – Australian content – continue to be made."

As reported by sources, legislation will be introduced to Parliament this week.

These updated production obligations were originally scheduled implemented by July last year but concerns over how they would interact with a free trade agreement involving America led to the plans being delayed.

Officials mentioned challenges engaging in negotiations with the US during their electoral process.

After President Trump was elected, there was then concern regarding if the rules could lead American officials to implement trade measures targeting Australian interests.

Now, with the dust settled, and with improved relations internationally, those rules have returned for consideration.

Although professional associations applauded the news, platforms have yet to issue statements regarding this development.

Back in 2022, digital services released a report emphasizing their cultural and financial contribution on the national entertainment sector.

However, some observers interpreted this as strategic positioning in anticipation of coming legislation.

Production slump

Current local productions on streaming platforms feature multiple programs spanning various categories.

Like many countries, Australia's creative industries experienced challenges in recent years, in part due to reduced activity throughout the health crisis.

In the financial year recently concluded, investment in feature films and TV series made in Australia fell by nearly 30%, according to sector statistics.
