Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved no match against a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
