Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
