The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
