Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
