In a recent development, Ukraine's leader Zelenskyy has disclosed that Washington has outlined a draft peace framework that includes defense assurances for his nation lasting for a period of 15 years.
Details of the Proposal
The Ukrainian leader noted that in the course of critical discussions with American leader President Trump, he had requested security guarantees for as long as 50 years. Nonetheless, the outlined plan envisions a shorter assurance of one and a half decades from the United States.
It is not clear what these assurances would assume, but the Ukrainian leader has been advocating for "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, modeled on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's founding principle that an attack on one member is considered an act of war against every member.
Progress on Peace Talks
According to Zelenskyy, Washington's protection assurances for his country under the revised peace plan outline have been 100% agreed, although the American leader expressed more caution, estimating the agreement at more like ninety-five percent.
The two presidents said that progress had been made during the discussions in Mar-a-Lago. The US President, nevertheless, warned that there were a couple of challenging remaining points, including over territory.
Prerequisites for Engagement
In related comments, the Ukrainian President stated to the press that a meeting with Russia would be feasible once the US and European leaders endorsed a peace framework put forward by Kyiv to bring hostilities to a close.
This statement comes in response to Donald Trump remarked to reporters that he thought a meeting involving three parties between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen once the timing is appropriate.
Background of Engagements
The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have not held direct talks since the end of 2019. Their last meeting, facilitated by the the presidents of France and chancellor of Germany, sought to restart efforts to end the ongoing conflict.
More recently, in May 2025, the Kremlin leader refused to attend talks in Turkey for a proposed meeting with Zelenskyy, rejecting a face-to-face meeting suggestion to talk about ending the war in Istanbul.
Unresolved Land Disputes
One major unresolved issue remains the status of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Trump said that a plan to turn the area, which is mostly under Russian control, into a DMZ continues to be a topic of debate.
He added that it will be apparent in the coming weeks whether the hostilities can cease.
The leaders have emphasized that the protracted diplomatic process would carry on as they strive for a final resolution to the multi-year hostilities.
