Zelensky Remains Reserved on Cruise Missile Discussions with Trump Following White House Meeting

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have departed from a Washington summit empty-handed after failing to obtain the long-desired long-range Tomahawk missiles from US President Donald Trump.

Zelensky stated following the civil meeting that he and Trump had discussed advanced missile systems, but chose to avoid public declarations on that matter "since the US administration does not want an intensification."

Trump's Position on Missile Supply

While Trump left open the possibility of supplying the missiles to Ukraine, his tone during the Washington discussions was cautious.

"With hope they won't need it, ideally we can end the conflict without thinking about Tomahawks," President Trump remarked, adding that the United States required the weapons for its own security.

The American leader acknowledged that sending the missiles would be "a significant escalation, but discussions will continue."

Global Political Developments

The Trump-Zelensky meeting came just a day after President Trump held telephone discussions with President Vladimir Putin and agreed to meet him in Budapest soon.

After the discussions, Trump used social media to call for Ukraine and Moscow to "cease current positions" and end the war.

Ukrainian Viewpoint and Suggestions

The Ukrainian leader proposed that Ukraine could offer drones in exchange for the missile systems, a suggestion that prompted smiles and nodding from Trump.

Zelensky also praised his counterpart on his efforts in securing a peace deal in the Middle East, suggesting that the US leader could capitalize on that momentum to help resolve Russia's war in his country.

Future Negotiations and Concerns

Questioned about whether the prospect of Ukrainian forces having the advanced missiles had influenced Putin to agree to meet the US leader, the Ukrainian president responded, "I don't know," noting that the prospect had caused Moscow to be "afraid since it is a strong weapon."

When questioned if he was departing Washington with greater optimism that Ukraine would receive the missiles, he said, "My approach is realistic."

Zelensky maintains that employing these missiles to strike at Moscow's energy infrastructure would significantly damage Putin's war economy.

Personal Consequences of the Conflict

"Truth and democracy will win, and all the violence and aggression will disappear," stated one local businessman. "We simply wish to exist peacefully, we don't want to give up, we only desire to be left in peace."

The emotional response emerged as citizens in the Ukrainian capital continue to rebuild their communities and businesses damaged by ongoing missile attacks.

Ongoing Peace Process

In recent days, Trump had demonstrated an willingness to the concept of providing the missile systems, even as Putin cautioned that such a move would additional pressure the bilateral relations.

President Trump had anticipated that a personal meeting in the US state in last summer would help persuade Putin to enter into comprehensive peace talks to resolve the conflict, but that summit failed to produce a significant progress.

Both presidents currently arranging for further discussions as the conflict in the region continues to develop.
